!!! SWSC MIDSEASON REPORT !!!

April 2013 - It is a great time to be at SWSC! We are in the middle of a wonderful spring season. With a month left until the end of the season, I wanted to take the opportunity to reflect on all the positive things happening at our club.

Many of our teams are performing really well on the field, which says our coaches are doing an overall fantastic job. Some of these results are shown in the win/loss record and some of this is shown by the improvement in the way the teams are playing during the games. Some of the current standings of our teams are:
U7 Boys - 1st place
U8 Boys - 1st and 2nd place
U7/U8 Girls - 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th place out of 9 teams
U9 Girls - 3rd and 4th place
U10 Boys - 1st, 3rd, and 4th place out of 12 teams
U10 Girls - 4th place out of 11 teams
U12 Girls - 1st place out of 19 teams
U10 Challenge Boys - 1st and 3rd place
U11 Challenge Boys - 4th place
U11 Challenge Girls - 1st place

The excitement doesn't stop with the action on the field, as there has been other excitement around our club creating lots of buzz. I put together and promoted the Wilmington Hammerhead exhibition game at Southwest High School. The kids had a blast as we formed the Human Tunnel and marched in the Parade of Teams at halftime. The game was a big fundraiser for the Southwest High School athletic department allowing them to purchase new uniforms for the men's and women's soccer teams, as well as also raising money for our club. We hosted a Wilmington Hammerhead spring break camp that had 80 kids in attendance! Future camps are in the planning stages, including our 3rd Annual Summer Kickoff Camp. As we continue to expand our partnership with the Hammerheads, we will be the exclusive Onslow location selling discounted tickets for all Hammerhead home games this season. It's Hammer Time!

We have our Family Fun Day coming up on Sunday, April 21 from 2-5. All members are invited to come out and attend as we celebrate our micro league players. (See Fun Day article below) We are one of the few clubs still doing this end of season celebration.

Our goalkeeper training is scheduled on Thursday nights throughout the month of April and the first week of May. Please try to have your keepers there for Coach Luis to try to help them hone their skills on this very specialized position. This is just in time to help us win those PK shootouts during the tournaments.

We are still offering the coaches education incentive plan to any coach that registers for and completes a coaching course. Upon completion, the coach will be reimbursed back half of the cost of the course. This is our investment in our coaches to help them in their quest to help our kids become better players.

I am getting close to being able to announce some more outstanding coaching news that will be very beneficial to all coaches in our club as we continue to strive to be the best club in the area. Stay tuned for more details as they become available.

GO SOUTHWEST!!!        ...Allen Whaley

Wilmington Hammerhead Spring Break Camp a Huge Success

On April 1-4, SWSC hosted the Wilmington Hammerhead Spring Break Camp. We were very excited to offer this great opportunity to the SWSC kids as well as kids from the surrounding area. With great weather and 80 campers, the club was buzzing with excitement each day of the camp. The Hammerhead coaching staff, comprised of current Hammerhead players, kept the camp fun, informative, and fast-paced. A tremendous week of soccer was capped off by the campers competing in skills competitions, an autograph session with the coaches, and receiving their camp shirts while snacking on pizza courtesy of the Wilmington Hammerheads and Michaelangelo's Pizza. We are extremely proud to have hosted them and look forward to the next camp that is already in the planning stages! -- Allen Whaley
